IVORY COAST BETE PEOPLE "GRE" MASK. Patinated Bete mask, traditionally from the Bete people of Cote d'Ivoire, are known as "gre" in the Bete language; they have historically served multiple purposes, including preparing men for combat and embodying spirits of the natural world. They are often used in both happy and unhappy events. Mask is made of wood and adorned with brass nails or studs.
